Born in São Paulo, a descendant from a family of Italian migrant musicians: her grandfather was a conductor and her father a saxophonist, young Lica began her career in Europe.
Through an intense set of artistic experimentations, Lica was soloist singer in several bands and performed in the Rocky Horror Show, directed by Wally Bockmeyer in Cologne, Germany.
In the meantime, she won the prestigious "Sarah Vaughan" award and a scholarship for the Berklee College of Music in Boston. Later, she decided to return to Italy, the original land of her ancestors, to study drawing and began her professional career as a singer, musician and artist there.
Through her musical performances, the young Paulistana was able to support herself and in 1980 had the great opportunity to open the concert of Sun Ra in Treviso with her Arkestra, the revolutionary fusion group mixing jazz, psychedelic and world music.
Over the last four decades, Lica continued experimenting through her performances during events and festivals: first, with the avant-garde jazz group Art Ensemble of Chicago as well as with jazz pianists and composers, such as Paul Bley from Canada, the NYCity-based Brazilian guitarist Romero Lubambo and Omar Sosa from Cuba.
In 1992, she released her first album “Our Favorite Songs” together with Stefano Scutari, followed two years later by a recording for the album “Music of the World”, a project that celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the United Nations. Inn 1996, while living in Cologne, she co-produced with the artist Antonio Dias the album PELE, with legends of the Jazz world, Charlie Mariqano0, Jeff Hamilton, John Goldsby, Paul Shigihara, Paulo Bellinati. At the Deutsche Welle, Lica does several experimental recordings under the direction of Mahi Ismail, and plays in the best Jazz clubs and Festivals around Germany and Asia. Once back to Brazil in the year 2000, Lica started new experimental works with new languages interpreting poems by Augusto and Haroldo de Campos and producing her first multimedia shows in collaboration with plastic artists and dancers at the Museum of Modern Art in Rio. From to 200 to this day, Lica recorded many albums solo and was a guest player on other albums, projects and concerts, as listed on her discography.
In her new 2018 album “Quero Querer”, Lica Cecato celebrates four decades in music. Recorded with arranger and multi-instrumentalist Paulo Calasans, the singer and singer-songwriter duets in three songs: first with Italian singer Mariella Nava in “Voglio Volere", the Italian version of "Quero Querer", then with Brazilian Zeca Baleiro whom Lica first met while opening his concert at the Città della Musica in Rome and with Zélia Duncan.
A Forty-year long career now celebrated with an intensely profound and mature album where her whole musical life from her first to her contemporary compositions are featured. The portrait of a woman with a Renaissance profile and flair and a citizen of the world: Lica lives in Brazil, Italy and Japan, equally active and talented as a designer, writer, photographer and visual artist.

サンパウロのイタリア系移民の家庭に生まれる。イタリア生まれの祖父は指揮者、父は管楽器奏者という家庭環境に育ち、幼い頃から音楽に親しんでいた。しかし、本人は美術方面へ進むつもりだったという。ところが二十歳の頃から、ギターを持って歌うことに目覚め、以降、音楽家としての道を歩むことになった。1980 年代後半には米国のバークリー音楽院に学び、「サラ・ヴォーン賞」を受賞するなど、歌手としての実績を積み上げていきました。
母国語であるポルトガル語の他に、伊・西・仏・英・独・日の 6 カ国語を操り、縦横無尽に世界中を駆け巡り、これまでに共演してきたミュージシャンは数知れず……。
日系ブラジル人の多いサンパウロで生まれたリカは、日本文化を身近に感じ、日本食を好みます。彼女は、1980年代に入り日本語を熱心に勉強、1986年に初来日を果たしました。そして、今や毎年のように来日するほどの大の日本びいきとなり、最近、日本の友達の家に離れを建て、彼女の半分は日本人になりました。

Nata a San Paolo, Brasile, figlia e nipote di musicisti italiani emigrati, nonno direttore d’orchestra e padre sassofonista, inizia presto intense esperienze in Europa come solista in varie formazioni e partecipando come attrice nel Rocky Horror Show, per la regia di Wally Bockmeyer. Nel frattempo vince il premio “Sarah Vaughan” e una borsa di studio per il Berklee College of Music di Boston dove consegue succesivamente la laurea.
All’inizio della sua carriera, in Italia, paese in cui la musica divenne il sostegno economico di quella giovane donna di San Paolo tornata nella terra dei suoi antenati per studiare disegno, Lica ebbe la grande occasione di aprire il concerto di Sun Ra a Treviso, nel 1980, con la sua Arkestra, il gruppo rivoluzionario che fondeva jazz, psichedelismo e world music. Questo è stato uno dei tanti incontri musicali di Lica negli ultimi quattro decenni, tra cui si annovera anche la partecipazione a eventi e festival al fianco del gruppo jazz d'avanguardia Art Ensemble di Chicago, pianisti e compositori jazz come il canadese Paul Bley e il cubano Omar Sosa.
Nel 1992 pubblica il suo primo disco Our Favorite Songs in duetto con Stefano Scutari, cui segue due anni dopo la partecipazione all’album Music of the World, progetto discografico che celebra il cinquantennale delle Nazioni Unite.
In Brasile, a partire dal 2000, sperimenta nuovi linguaggi interpretando poesie di Augusto e Haroldo de Campos e realizzando i suoi primi spettacoli multimediali in collaborazione con artisti plastici e ballerini presso il Museo di Arte Moderna di Rio.
Seguono gli album Pele (1996, in Germania con John Goldsby, Charlie Mariano, Jeff Hamilton, Hubert Nuß, Paul Shigihara and Paulo Bellinati); Constelario (2001), LIve in Europe, Lica Cecato and Romero Lubambo, (2002) Pimenta Rosa (2005), Copacabana (2009) e Gingabytes (2010), progetti discografici che vedono la partecipazione di alcuni dei principali strumentisti contemporanei. Musicisti come il chitarrista Romero Lubambo, Hélio Delmiro, Heitor TP e Vernon Reid (quest'ultimo del gruppo Living Colour), i bassisti Richard Bona, John Patitucci, Celso Pixinga, Marcelo Mariano e Arthur Maia, i batteristi Carlos Bala, Will Calhoum (Living Colour) e Rodney Holmes, i tastieristi Paulo Calasans e José Lourenço, Otmaro Ruiz, il percussionista Armando Marçal e il trombettista Jesse Sadoc.
Nel suo nuovo album Quero Querer (2018), Lica Cecato celebra quattro decenni in musica. Registrato con l'arrangiatore e polistrumentista Paulo Calasans, in questo progetto la cantante e cantautrice duetta in tre canzoni con l'italiana Mariella Nava (“Voglio volere" è la versione italiana di "Quero Querer"), i brasiliani Zeca Baleiro (che Lica ha incontrato aprendo un suo concerto alla Città della Musica di Roma) e Zélia Duncan. Quarant’anni di anni di carriera ora celebrati in un disco intenso e maturo che racchiude la sua vita musicale dalle sue prime composizioni sino a quelle più recenti.
Un percorso che vede 16 CD pubblicati, tra dischi solisti e collaborazioni, concerti e progetti con i più autorevoli musicisti della scena internazionale.
Il ritratto di una donna dal profilo rinascimentale, cittadina del mondo ( vive tra Brasile, Italia e Giappone) ugualmente attiva e talentuosa come designer, scrittrice, fotografa e artista figurativa.
